Running before the storm

The second race in this winter’s Alex Murray (Construction) cross country series took place in marvellous conditions, which was the “calm before the storm”! As the island braced itself for a storm-force blast the one hundred and forty plus competitors and the spectators gathered at the Castle Green had an ideal three hour period for running in a superb location!

The day’s racing had  it all, superb individual “front running win’s”, close races run to the line, strength and style runners, mass numbers and continued schools competition in the team events. Some of the dominant local runners such as Robert Jones, Ailis Murray and Campbell MacDonald all ready known at District level had fine wins. Other good winning runs came from Isabelle Bain, Connor MacLean, Kyle Munro, Catriona Rigby and Peigi MacKellar who hopefully will continue to perform and perhaps also become established at District level?

There was also very hard runs put in by those contesting the other top slots such as Robert Angus Scott of Stornoway Primary who pushed Connor MacLean in the under 11 race. While Connor has the definite advantage in the Lewis and Harris series Robert will have his eyes set on the fourth Castle Grounds cross country run, the Western Isles Championship on March 21st (as no doubt will several Uist runners). Mairi MacLennan in the corresponding girls under 11 race had a tougher race against a very much in form Peigi MacKellar, but she did lead home a very strong Back team, currently leading this category. Schools and communities from throughout the island are represented at the event; this Saturday saw the first mass entry from Laxdale which was most encouraging. Other areas such as Point and the West Side and Ness would further increase participation numbers and competition in the series.

The three race series is a wonderful introduction to the sport and Stornoway Running and Athletics Club receives lots of new members through the series. Next Saturday it’s back to normal club sessions at 10.30 meeting at the Golf Club car park, new member’s (p4 +) are very welcome! SRAC are grateful to sponsors Alex Murray (Construction), Stornoway Trust for kind permission to use the grounds for the event and Lewis Crofters for their support.
