Lewis and Harris XC Series 2005-06

Race 2 - Results

Under 9 Girls Start

The continued popularity of the Lewis and Harris winter cross country series was very evident as a bumper entry from all areas of Lewis and Harris in excess of one hundred and sixty took part in the second race of the series! Both entrants and spectators enjoyed exceptional weather conditions and those giving their support at the Castle green start – finish areas were also treated to some very entertaining contests as many of the age group races were closely fought contests.

The routes designed by Gavin Earons were quality “country” running, offering a series of climbs, twists and turns, the “odd” firm path but in the main lots of soft mud that the younger age groups revelled in! The under 9’s ran an 800 meter route and the under 11’s did the same route twice, while a larger 1600 meter loop was set-up for all the other age groups. The under 13 completing 2 circuits, the 15’s 3 circuits and all others completing 4 laps.

The closest race of the day was the boys under 11 category, the first three places being separated by only three seconds! The boys and girls under 9 events again were close affairs with only four and seven separating the first three places respectively! Peigi McKellar racked-up her second win of the series, but could yet be caught in the final race given the close finishes so far, Mairi MacLennan (Back) and Chloe Thompson (Sgoil nan Loch) will certainly be trying to prevent Peigi having a clean sweep of victories! In the boy’s under 9 race Melbost’s Angus Murray dropped two place to finish third and Tolsta’s Stuart MacDonald gained a place from second to win over Stornoway Primary’s Scott Montgomery.

Campbell MacDonald’s dominance in cross country running was well tested by Allan Murray (Melbost) and Michael Patton of Sir E Scott school. However Campbell did edge Allan and Michel out by one second and two seconds! Interestingly the under 9 and 11 had the Murray and MacDonald brothers in the first three in each event! Catriona MacKay (Tolsta) and Rebecca Munro (Laxdale) had a close fought race in the girl’s under 11, 1 mile race. Catriona as ever led from the front and Rebecca opted for the slower start working through the field in an attempt to catch Catriona. But the Tolsta girl had reserve in the final race to the line and an out winner by a five second margin, to the appreciative applause of the assembled crowd!

Jane MacIver and Robert Jones (both Nicolson), winners of the under 13 race in the first race of the series again had victories, but both were seriously challenged. The highly talented Lawson twins, Calum and Uilleam pushed Jones all the way, while another emerging young talent Tyler MacLean came very close to outrunning MacIver! Kirsty Munro (Nicolson) was run-away-winner in the under 15 girl’s race and looked very comfortable on the course. Even more comfortable and perhaps the best performance of the day was Sir E Scott’s Calum Smith, who ran the second fastest average lap of the day while winning the boys under 15 race.

The hard working Mackenzie’s (no relation), Eilidh and Andrew “Keggs” ran to form to win their under 17 events, although another good performer was Caillean McCombe who finished 18 seconds behind Keggs. The coaching of Coinneach Morrison in Harris in recent months looks to be paying dividends through, Peigi, Caillean, Calum and others!

There is very clearly plenty talent throughout Harris and Lewis and the growth of athletics, seen in the numbers entering events and attending club sessions is very encouraging. Although the report highlights those with winning placing’s on the day, there were loads of enthusiastic youngsters enjoying themselves no matter what finishing position. Well done to all that took part, remember to polish your well earned medals!

The team events continue to be well contested and there are some possible new names to be engraved on the shields for this season! The points count tally can be seen below.

Thanks to club members, parents, friends etc that helped on the day and contributed to a satisfactory event. Thanks to Stornoway Trust for the grounds and their grounds staff for clearing the falling trees “in our way” and sponsors Alex Murray Construction.
