Sean in sprint finish mode!

The big attendances continued at the Lewis and Harris Cross Country series as both those taking part and their supporters braved the less than attractive conditions of the day. A total of one hundred and two took part in the days running and organisers SRAC see every one of them a winner!

Srac XC
Over half of Tolsta Primary took part and brought half of Tolsta along to support them!

A compact course was set out for this the second race in the series, which was intended to be flat, well flattish, fast and offering good spectating by using multiple laps a of short route. As it turned out the spectating was indeed very good as the runners turned in the laps. But the runners' reported view was that the compact nature of the course offered no long sections to settle into a steady pace and was toughish, well tough!

The first race of the day included the under 17, under 20 and senior runners and got off to as swift start as Andrew MacKenzie decided to take to the front and set the pace. In the early stages the under 17 athlete looked as if he may be heading for a first overall win outside his age group. But in the third and fourth laps of the 1100metre course Murdo MacKenzie upped the work rate and took the line first by a thirteen second margin over the 5.5k distance. Chris Shields made his debut on the country finishing third overall and first senior, but Gavin Earons leads the seniors in the series with a fourth place in the first race and a second on Saturday.

In the first junior age category race Campbell MacDonald continue his fine form by winning the boys under 9 race and looks favourite to win the series title. However there is still all to be lost and won in the other two medal places so an exciting final race is in prospect! In the girls race Beth Gilbert of Stornoway Primary; winner of the first race was edged into third place by Peggy McKellar of Sir E Scott. Lucy’s win doubled the day’s success for Tolsta following Campbell’s win in the boy’s race. Lucy and Beth now sit within a point of each other going into the final race in January!

Tolsta provided the winner’s of both girl’s and boy’s in the under eleven’s race. Sean MacLeod had a fantastic battle with Laxdale runner Robert Jones before eventually crossing the winning line first. A bit further back Andrew MacMillan Stornoway Pr put in a solid run and held off Laxdale’s Josh Sinclair for third. Rivals for the day in the girl’s race were SRAC training “pals” Ailis Murray Stornoway Pr, Holly MacIver Sandwickhill and Catriona MacKay Tolsta. The three know each other well and this is the closest category of the Angus MacIver Series, Catriona was winner on Saturday, Holly second and Ailis Winner in the first race third. Should Holly win the final race ahead of Ailis then Catriona the Series would have it’s first “dead heat”!

The under 13’s ran a shortened course in which the girls performed well against the boys. As ever Jane MacIver gave a 100% effort a managed to hold off Kirsty Munro and Seilebost’s Samantha Martin. Mairtainn Shields won the boy’s race with a bit still in the tank, but full credit to Calum Robertson Stornoway Primary and James MacIver Sandwickhill who both have a year to contest this age group.

The final race was another thriller as Cailean McCombe Sir E Scott, Grant Stewart Bayble and Calum Smith fought out the placings for the under 15 race. Calum set the early pace followed closely by Grant and the two looked to be well clear of McCombe. Then with half a lap to go Grant Stewart made a break to try and win the race. Grant increased his lead on Smith and it was a strong challenge from the back by McCombe that led to a sprint for the line between the two. Cailean just nicked it in the end, but never look away in a race including Stewart, what an entertaining race!
