13th November 2004 - Lews Castle Grounds Stornoway

This seasons Angus MacIver winter Cross Country got off to a good start as ninety three entrants in age categories from under 9 to seniors (veterans) ran round a well set up and challenging course around the Lews Castle grounds.

Significantly, it was the smaller schools that were once again best represented at the first in the three race series. Tolsta school appeared in numbers taking over fifty percent of their pupils and are well placed in several of the categories for both boys and girls.

Some of the Tolsta Runners!

Newcomers to the series this season are Uig School and have taken the lead in the boys under 11 event. But both Stornoway Primary and Sandwickhill will no doubt be trying to make up the gap in the next two races as more runners will be available for the fixtures on the 4th of December and then the 22nd January.

Excellent support for all!

There was an encouraging amount of parents teachers and friends in attendance to support all those taking part and they were rewarded with some very entertaining races to the line.

Campbell leads the Under 9s from the start

In the boys under 9 race, Campbell MacDonald (Tolsta) was the day's first winner, he lead from the start and wan by a 13 second margin. The race for second and third saw Ross MacIver (Sandwickhill) and Allan Murray (Melbost) being awarded the same time with Ross been adjudged the second place.

There was a similar outcome in the boys under 11 race as again there was Tolsta first place through Sean MacLeod who finished with a strong run round the castle green. Luke MacDonald (Stornoway Primary) and William Smith (Uig) were close behind Sean - both were given the same time but Luke adjudged second.

Beth Gilbert may have given her father Ian inspiration to take part in the next race with her winning run in the girls under 9’s race. Tolsta featured throughout this particular category.

Under 9 Girls and Boys

The girls under 11 race was an excellent event with the top seven all regulars with SRAC although the girls come from five different schools. Ailis Murray, Stornoway Pr, was back to good form and there was a brave effort to catch her by Catriona MacKay (Tolsta) who eventually finished second. That’s one each so far this season!

SRAC thank all those helping on the day, the Stornoway Trust for permission to use the grounds all the supportive parents and sponsors Angus MacIvers.
