Western Isles Community Games

North Uist Win Again

A total of 11 areas took part in the Western Isles Community Games at Smith Avenue in Stornoway on Saturday — which was once again won by the North Uist team.

After a short speech by Bill Howat, Chief Executive of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, the competitors walked round the track behind David Harris, piper for the day. The programme involved a series of events for all age groups (primary, secondary, 17-35 and over-35), including 100m, 200m, 800m, as well as shot putt, long jump and relay.

Although the weather was initially kind, it was very wet in the last hour. The results are as follows:

1 - North Uist (198);
2 - South Uist (140);
3 - Point (121);
4 - West Side (119);
5 - Broadbay (114);
6 - Stornoway North (94);
7 - Ness (91);
8 - Uig (81);
9 - Stornoway South (66);
10 - Harris (52);
11 - Lochs (45).

Congratulations to both Uist teams who again demonstrated superior talent and organisation. It was an enjoyable day despite the rain at the end.

Thanks to Mr. Howat for presenting the medals throughout the afternoon, to David for his excellent piping and most of all to the volunteer officials and team co-ordinators.

This was the fifth staging of the Community Games, but for the event to continue there needs to be more support from the communities in Lewis.
