2006 Race Report On Saturday the 12th of August the North Harris Trust organised the third run of the Tiorgha Mor Hill Race. Eighteen runners assembled at the dam in Glen Chliostair and prepared for the five mile hill race which takes competitors along the trail path to Loch Aiseabhat before climbing to the 2200ft summit of Tiorgha Mor. Upon reaching the summit, competitors have to tackle the awkward downhill along the south side of the hill before they return to the finish line just below their original starting point. Stuart Simpson of Ochill Hill Runners took an early lead from the rest and he managed to hold onto the lead for the entire race finishing in 51 minutes and 47 seconds, beating his time from the previous year by 3 minutes and setting a new course record in the process. This was the first time the Hill Race had not only one but two father and son combinations running in the event, with Jim and Norman Galbraith from Glasgow running and also Kenny and Donald MacRae, originally from Harris, also running. Jim Galbraith of Calbost Harriers was in 2nd place in a time of 58 minutes and 46 seconds. His son Norman who runs for Giffnock North finished in 4th with a time of 1 hour 2 minutes and nine seconds. Donald MacRae was in 3rd place in a time of 59minutes and 16 seconds, his father Kenny MacRae finished 8th with a time of 1hour 11 minutes and 22 seconds. First local male was Duncan ‘Cherry’ Macleod, who finished just ten seconds before Kenny MacRae, in 7th place with a time of 1hour 11minutes and 12 seconds. Neil MacRury was the first from Stornoway Running and Athletics Club to get across the line in 5th place with a time of 1hour 2minutes and 35seconds. Jayne Miller of Barvas, was the first female across the line with a time of 1hour 13 minutes and 55 seconds, she was followed by Janice Smith, of Rosllin, Edinburgh, in 2nd place in a time of 1hour 25minutes and 49seconds. In 3rd place was Harris veteran runner Ethel MacNally, who is 68 years old, completed the course in 1 hour 59 minutes and 5 seconds. The Trust would like to thank all the competitors who competed and all the volunteers who helped with the preparation of food and post-race refreshments and also the marshals.
