SRAC Smash Radcliffe Marathon Record!
Paula Run 12th December 2009

Run Paula
It’s not always easy to get every one in the right place

On Saturday the attempt by the club juniors to try and match the amazing pace of the women’s’ World Record holder Paula Radcliffe turned out to be a really great club event! Running a marathon is a big deal and anyone that’s run one, no matter what the pace will tell you so! Running one in relay certainly is a bittie easier, but the idea to have the juniors run one in relay and try to match the world’s number one female distance runner’s record time caught the imagination of them all!

All the age groups from 9 years to 17 took part whether sprinter or endurance runner and to set a pace to match Paula’s 5minute 10 seconds per mile made for a very good session for them all. While it was a big group it very clearly demonstrated what type of pace Radcliffe ran while setting the World Record for the marathon and if a set of 8 x 100 meters parlauff involving 5 of the older middle distance group was hard work; the appreciation of her record was put into perspective!

Sister act Jodie & Abbie carry the baton

In total one hundred and four and a half laps were required to be run and as the coaches on the track side added the laps and tried to calculate the last few meters, DISASTER! We had run over distance, but on quick review the young ‘uns had well passed the 2 hours 15minutes 25 mark!

Holly and Alison can’t believe it and get airborne!

Wait a minute, what was that time, 2Hrs 03mins and 53 seconds? Mmm, move over Haile! Yep, some of you have spotted it; the day’s relay over the 26.2 was 6 seconds faster than the great man’s World Record set in Berlin in 2008! (Including an inadvertent 500meters or so extra!)

So what better than cake and pop to celebrate? But only once a year!

The main objective of the run was to raise funds for travel to mainland competition, who knows one day we may produce a Paula or a McColgan and that all needs to be funded. The figure raised in the first junior section fund raising for about three years is unknown as all has not been handed in, so please pass on to Stuart Baird or one of the committee.
