Pentland Road 10k

Nine runners took up the challenge on Saturday to test their half marathon preparation in the SRAC 10K Pentland Road handicap race. Starting six miles out and with the finish at Lava's Garage, the conditions were hardly ideal with a very strong, cold crosswind and then driving rain.

The race has a staggered start, with the estimated fastest runner going out last. First off was Shona Gillies who was feeling a bit off-colour, she was followed by Fred Silver and then Ruaridh Ferguson, fresh from running the London Marathon six days previously.

Young Jonathon Murray set out into the unknown, not having run this far on the road before, and acquitted himself very well, but the surprise of the day was seeing Andy MacDonald turning up to race after a very long break away from road running. It was no surprise to see how well he performed and he was delighted to come in first, a minute ahead of Fred Silver and Bill Ferguson.

Alasdair Dunlop, who started last, over 17 minutes behind Shona, ran an excellent 33.17, to finish ahead of Kenny MacDonald and Roddy Gillies. Ruaridh Ferguson came in seventh place and must have been relieved that he didn't have another 20 miles to race at the end!

Results:

1 Andy MacDonald 37.38;
2 Fred Silver 47.17;
3 Bill Ferguson 44.25;
4 Alasdair Dunlop 33.17;
5 Kenny MacDonald 43.05;
6 Roddy Gillies 38.16;
7 Ruaridh Ferguson 47.31;
8 Jonathon Murray 43.05;
9 Shona Gillies 50.49.
