SRAC Newsletter October 2011

We are now heading towards the dark and dismal winter days, which means you have to run extra fast to keep warm and dry!

Our first winter training session was on Saturday 15th and we had a great turnout especially from the younger age group. They were filled with enthusiasm and energy, so keep it going. Winter training will be at the Castle Grounds every Saturday from 10.30 to 12.00. Meet at Porters Lodge – not the Golf Club car park. The cost of the session is £1.50. In addition for S1 and above, training will start again on Tuesday nights at the Track from 6.00pm to 7.15pm.

We have set our dates for the Lewis and Harris Cross Country Series and this is something to work towards over the next few weeks and months for all young athletes.

Please register for the event through your school. However some schools don’t take part in the Cross Country so if your school does not register for the event then please e-mail Adrienne at adriennestewart@btinternet.com to let her know your name, age and date of birth, by 8th November.

On Friday 4th November we will be hosting a Halloween Lamplight Run. This will be held in the Castle Grounds, meeting at 6.30pm at the Woodlands Centre. We had the first one last year and this was so much fun. Dress up and we will run in two’s or three’s (young and old!) though the dark, creepy crawly grounds!
Oh I’m scared already!! Afterwards there will be some delicious hot chocolate in the Woodlands Centre for everyone taking part and a prize for the best dressed runner.

Peigi, Catriona and Alison  Kyle

On Saturday 8th October a small team of hard core SRAC runners headed off to Dornoch for the North District Cross Country Relays. Catriona Bain was first up for the SRAC girls.  Her teammates waiting at the finish line in anticipation but they didn’t have to wait long as Catriona stormed through finishing in 3rd position after the first of the three legs. It didn’t take Peggi Mackellar long to settle into her pace on the second leg and by half way she had a 100m lead on the Inverness Harrier who was in hot pursuit. By the finish the gap had closed slightly. Peggi then handed over to Alison Macinnes to take SRAC home on the final leg. In the end our mainland competitors proved too strong and after a gutsy leg by Alison we narrowly missed out on a medal finishing 4th

In the boys team Kyle Munro stepped up to the start full of confidence with a cheeky smile on his face. He ran a great first leg managing to stick close to the leaders finishing in 6th position. Connor Maclean took off like a bullet on the second leg and ran well to record the 6th fastest time of the day overall. He managed to overtake one team finishing in 5th place that put us in a strong position going into the final leg.

Our third leg runner Kenneth Macsween had too much to ask to get us into medal contention especially considering the strength of the opposition however he performed well with Kenneth and team finishing in 6th position overall

Stornoway Running and Athletics Club will be holding its Annual General Meeting on Wednesday 16th November at 7.30pm in St Columbas Church meting room. All parents are welcome to come along and if you are keen to be part of the Committee or just to help out on a Saturday let us know.

The Club membership runs from January to December and we will be handing out membership forms both for new members and existing members in November. The fees for membership will be set at the AGM and these will be on the form. For those young athletes attending Tuesday sessions, they MUST be members of SRAC as this is a Club training session, so be sure to renew your membership.

In addition, in order to attend mainland events, athletes must also be members of SRAC as well as registering with Scottish Athletics.

The next mainland Competition is Saturday 26th November which will be the North District Cross Country
