Happy Summer SRAC

SRAC Newsletter June 2010

We are now well into the Track and Field Season with a number of events under our belts. In March three athletes from SRAC were selected to attend the Sprints Development day in Inverness. Jodie, Hannah and Alasdair had a great day, although one or two did have a bad hair day!!!

At the North Districts SRAC had a very successful day with the athletes winning 23 medals - an impressive amount for any club.

Of the twenty seven competing at the regional finals twenty athletes achieved at least one personal best performance with Jenny MacTaggart posting three personal best’s in 100, 200 meters and long jump! Jane MacInnes, Chirsty Graham, Amanda Nicolson, Connor MacLean, Joseph O’Drisceoil, Micheil R Smith and Campbell MacDonald all achieved two individual personal best performances (P.B’s).

The first Hippo event was a success with several SRAC athletes being selected to be part of the Hippo Team for competing in the Scottish Young Athletics League for 2010.

The Half Marathon, 10k and Fun Run saw a huge amount of runners taking part - despite the weather – and we even had some of the Sprinters doing a 10k relay – yes really!!!

Some of the endurance athletes ran the 10k – it won’t be long before we see some of them in the half marathon.

On Saturday 19th June SRAC will be hosting the annual Western Isles Track and Field Championships which also incorporate the 2nd HIPPO event. You can collect a form from the sports centre or get one from the SRAC website.

You can either return these to Adrienne by Friday 18th or to the sports centre. The first race starts at 10.30 so make sure you register or collect your number by 10.00am at the latest. The results from the WITF Championships will be used by the organisers of the Hippo team to select the team athletes for the next event in the Scottish Young Athletes League (North East Division) in Aberdeen on the 4th July.

SRAC have fantastic new coaches joining the Club recently – Joan Budge, Margrit Macleod, Pam Macsween, Helen Macdonald, Stuart Baird, Tom Joyce, Sandy Maclean, Jonny Pritchard, Al Macrae and Magnus Moncleiff – photo shoot to follow!!

For the first time in many years SRAC now have dedicated coaches in Sprints, Endurance, Jumps and Throws ……..

There have been a few injuries in the Club in the past few months – none to do with athletics of course – they all stem from athletes pursing dangerous sports like roller blading!! Poor Georgia and Holly (Maclean) are having to watch from the sidelines but hopefully will be back to full speed soon.

This is now getting to the height of the track and field season and it is very important not to go into holiday mode as the schools close for the summer. You should keep training going and even increase the training throughout the summer in order to peak for the competitions in August and September!
