Big Cross Country Season ahead in Castle Grounds!
Lewis & Harris X Country Series; Stornoway Running & Athletics Club are well on track with preparation and readiness for this year’s cross country season, starting this Saturday 6th November in the Castle Grounds.
SRAC have organised the winter cross country season for over a decade now and are pleased that the event has again received financial support of Alex Murray Construction. The sponsorship ensures that each child (or adult) running receives a finisher’s medal at each of the three races in the series and prizes are also awarded to the top three entrants in each age category. All schools have been informed about the event and SRAC expect that the numbers taking part will again reach the successfully high entries of previous seasons.
Registration for all runs will be at the Castle Green from 9.15am to 10.30am race and entry fees are £2 for under 9 – under 17 and all older age groups £3. The timetable of races are as follows;
09.45 Under 17men all U-20’s & seniors,
10.40 Under 9 Girls,
10.50, Under 9 Boys,
11.00 Under 11 Girls,
11.05 under 11 Boys,
11.45 Under 17 women, U15Girls and under 15 Boys.
Parking should be at the Lews Castle or Cuddy Point.
SRAC Host District Championships; For the first time a Scottish Athletics District event will take place off the Scottish mainland and Stornoway will be the venue! Next Saturday’s local event will be a rehearsal for the “BIG” event on Saturday November 27th when club’s from all over the “north” travel to Stornoway to run the route in and about the Lews Castle!
This is a magnificent coup for SRAC in their 25th anniversary year! Many of the club’s young athletes are training hard for the event and SRAC hope to field a big men’s team as well as a reasonably strong ladies team. The hype of the District event being in Stornoway has even attracted some “missing” members to look out the ol’ spikes to take this once in a life time chance to run on home soil!
The District Championship will offer the best quality of runners of all ages in the north and great spectating. Anyone wishing to come along and watch or help out on the day (help is required) can get full details of the championship here.
Club sessions; are being well attended at the moment with a large upsurge in numbers attending of all abilities. As all abilities are catered for at these session why not come along? Tuesdays at Smith Avenue running track at 6pm (£3 / session) and Thursday’s at 5.30 now meeting at the Smith Avenue changing rooms. Thursdays will be road runs and this week there will be the first of the winter’s monthly 5K races. Not all races fall to the fast, as the organisers will ensure!
