Hard work, with some play in Skye

It was a small team of Stornoway Running and Athletics Club (SRAC) runners who travelled to Skye for the third of the Hebridean race series of half marathons. In a highly competitive field, Andy McMahon was best placed (19th) with a good time of 1.24.55, with Alan Inglis ten places behind in 1.28.24. Jim Bruce was a minute slower than last weeks Benbecula race in 1.45.55. SRAC’s Davie Hearn, who lives in Portree, ran the race in a penguin suit for the Crossroads charity. SRAC has a strong tradition of raising money for charity and has donated over £30,000 to various local charities over the years.

It was a junior SRAC member, Caitlin Mackenzie, who ran the outstanding race of the day, winning outright the 2km fun run for 8-9 year olds. Caitlin sprinted past two boys to the finish of the sixty plus field, winning in 14.29. Caitlin has been training hard through the winter cross country season with the other junior athletes at the club, and this win is a well deserved reward for her commitment.

After three half marathon weekends in a row, the series breaks until July 3rd in Barra. This race is now full, but there are still entries available for the final race in the series, the Harris half marathon, on 10th July. Details on the club website www.srac.org.uk
