International Call Up for Isles Athlete!

Following a weekend of record Personal Best performances at the closed Scottish Championships, Stornoway Running & Athletics Club 400m specialist Donnie “M” MacLeod became the first club athlete to gain selection to the senior Scottish Athletics squad!

Donnie has progressed very well over the past two years coming through the junior ranks (even managing the occasional cross-country race) to his current position of good form through dedication to serious training! Going into the closed Scottish Championships Donnie had only run under 50 seconds for 400 metres once. But after a hard winter training schedule he managed to dip under 50 in both his qualifying rounds and the final of the 400m. Although having to settle for fourth place at the championships, he did set a new Personal Best time of 49.57 seconds, enough to catch the selector’s eyes and thus a “call-up” to the Scottish team!

Donnie comes from a well known local “sporting” family, who will be very proud of his achievement as are all club members and coaches at SRAC. He is to be congratulated in his first season as a senior athlete, hopefully the beginning of a very bright future!

Another well known island athlete competing at the event was Eve Carrington, now studying in Glasgow. Eve competed in the High Jump and 100m hurdles. Although not jumping to her best form Eve did have a good run in the hurdles placing third. Both Eve and Donnie, will travel to Rhodes as part if the Western Isles team competing in the World Island Games. Hopefully their good early season form will continue through to successful Games in Rhodes.
