La
Liga Winter 2007
The first race of La Liga 2007 was a 5k - with a twist. Competitors had to estimate their time then run without a watch! Points were awarded not for the fastest time but for the time closest to estimate.
The race fit younger racers all took the "go for it option" and aimed for fast times while the old codgers took the "easy" option of trying to run a slow time.
Unfortunately for Neil, Neil and Gavin who all estimated 24 minutes they ended up chatting all the way round, forgot to keep an eye on the pace and ended up running a minute too fast. Gavin even realised it was too fast, stopped at the bottom of Smith Avenue, lost his nerve and sprinted to the line - if he had walked to the finish he could have been spot on.
Andrew had the fastest time of the night - an excellent 17m 49s and, because he was only 11 seconds off his estimated time, he also won the competition.
Ollie was only 12 seconds off his estimate and took second place, with Eilidh taking third place - still only 20 seconds off her estimated time.
Donnie ran an amazing 1m 15s faster than his estimate but to no avail - he was furthest off his estimate and so finished in last place - is there no justice in this world? Murdo Alex also had a good run but failed to reach his estimated time and finished down the pack.
