Three young athletes from Stornoway Running and Athletics Club attended the Scottish Indoor Championships on the 14th and 15th February at the Kelvin Hall in Glasgow.

They were met by three members of North Uist Amateur Athletics Club who also competed in the event.
On the Saturday Alasdair Summers (SRAC) and Carl Macphee (NUAAC) competed in the under 15 boys 60m and 200m. Alasdair ran an excellent time of 7.75 in the 60m and Carl ran his first 60m indoors in a time of 8.42. Alasdair did qualify for the semi final but because of misinformation from one of the officials he did not compete in this race. However he put in a great effort and may well have qualified for the final of the 60m. In the 200m Alasdair ran a time of 25.52 which gained him qualification for the B final of this event. Carl ran a good 27.20 – a PB for his 200m. Alasdair gained a PB in his second run of the 200m winning this race, with a time of 24.70, making him fourth overall from the A and B finalists.

The under 17 and under 20 event was held on Sunday and this was the chance for Ruaraidh and Pat (SRAC) and Mairi and Iain (NUAAC) to compete in their events. Pat and Ruaraidh ran the 60m with times of 7.74 and 7.43 respectively with Ruaraidh just failing to qualify for the final by 5/1000th of a second. Mairi Morrison ran a good 300m coming second in her heat. A good effort for her first time in a difficult competition. In the afternoon Mairi competed in the triple jump and put in a good jump of 9.27m. Iain Townsend ran in the under 20 men’s 1500m in a time of 4.27.89. It was then the turn of Ruaraidh and Pat in the men’s under 20 200m. Pat unfortunately was given lane 5 to run in which is the most difficult lane in the arena and as a result was disappointed in his time. However with 3 more years to go in his age group there will be plenty more chances for the young athlete. Ruaraidh ran a good time of 24.18 and came in second in his heat, giving him entry into the semi final of the event. However Ruaraidh’s luck wasn’t in for the lane draw and he ended up in lane 5!! No more said!!

The weekend was an enjoyable, successful and eventful one and it was great to meet up with young athletes from NUAAC at the same event. This is the first event of the season for the sprinters and Ruaraidh and Pat will be training hard towards their competition for the Island Games in Aland in July of this year. SRAC would like to thank LHSC for sponsoring the Lewis athletes attending the event.

The first draw of the 100 Club will be made by SRAC Chair, Tony Robson, at the next meeting of the Committee on 17th March. The winner of the £50.00 draw will be informed thereafter.
