HIPPO (The Highlands and Islands Performance Participation Opportunity) got under way recently in Stornoway with young athletes from throughout the Hebrides taking part. The day itself was somewhat blustery and cold, so hopes of personal best performances in the opening track and field competition of the year were slim! But there were some very encouraging performances and competition to some of last season’s multiple winners were strongly challenged! (Only dedicated hard work at training produces consistent top performances!)
Young athletes showing well in the day’s competition included; Cian Kirk from the newly formed athletic group from Daliburgh, Kayreen MacLeod of North Uist AAC in the sprint and long jump and SRAC’s Ceitlin MacKenzie with very good performances in the 800meters and shot putt. Connor MacLean continued in a successful day’s competition winning 800m, long jump and sharing the longest throw in Javelin with NUAAC’s Iain Ferguson. Similarly SRAC’s Abbie MacKay also kept up her level of performances from last season but was strongly challenged by training pal Amanda Nicolson who won a good hurdles race! Peigi MacKellar has also left off from her winning ways over the winters cross country courses and the Harris girl will surely benefit from some more time spend on a running track.
Making a mark for improved athletes of the day were Alicia MacSween in the under 17 sprints and Georgia MacLennan who has just changed from sprint to 800meters this season (well a few weeks ago)! Jenny MacTaggart had a sprint double win and looks to have put her multiple arm breaks of last year behind her, so perhaps a good season ahead? Unfortunately the scribe is a wee bit unfamiliar with all the Uist athletes, but Paul Morrison is certainly a good young talent on the track, while Nadine Froughi throws in field competition is very good. Best newcomer may well be Karen Finnie a recent recruit to SRAC, her shot putt was a convincing win!
While there is much talk about London 2012 it would appear the Western Isles has potential in athletics if it can be supported and nurtured to future World Island Games if not Glasgow 2014!
