Saturday 25th AprilLocal Results - Hippo Olympian Results The HIPPO’s Back in Town Saturday past saw the highly successful HIPPO (Highland’s and Island’s Performance Participation Opportunity) open graded athletics meet take place at Smith Avenue Track and Field facility. From the eighty plus young athletes that participated over 60% achieved personal best performances in what would have been the first track and field event for most of the competitors! This now auger’s well for the season ahead and both North Uist AAC and Stornoway Running & Athletics Club will look forward to the North District Championships in Inverness with a fair degree of confidence. HIPPO is a fantastic pathway into athletics for the younger athlete and also offers the opportunity for some of the more experienced athletes to try one or two other events out with their normal discipline. Hopefully the event will be promoted more in the schools throughout the islands’ just as they support the winter cross country season. The result of bigger entries to HIPPO will certainly unearth more of the local young talent that is undoubtedly out there and perhaps be the beginning’s of road to success to events such as World Island Games! So with the HIPPO in town there was some great middle distance running, HIPPO super swift sprints, un-HIPPO like light footed leaps and HIPPO-power throws! Leading the performances in the under 11 boy’s events was one of SRAC’s HIPPO-Olympian team winners of last season, Alasdair Rigby. Alasdair a young athlete with a very un-HIPPO like spring in his legs was top performer in the shot put, long jump and sprint in which he was first equal with Paul Morrison. Paul of North Uist AAC also returned very impressive performances and as well as his first equal in the sprint was second in the 600meters and fourth in the long jump. Mairi MacIntosh had two best of day performances in the 75m sprints and long jump. SRAC and NUAAC had good numbers participating in this under 11’s category and also put in many good performances, therefore both should score well in the HIPPO Olympian competition. The various age groups’s and overall club winners from clubs competing in Orkney, Shetland and Inverness will determined by a points scoring system awarded on results achieved at the different venues. In the under 13 age group SRAC’s Ross Allison had a superb run in the 800 meters while the sprints events over 100 and 200 meters were closely contested by Connor Maclean, SRAC and Ruaraidh Muncaster, NUAAC. In the girls events Jenny MacTaggart and Abbie MacKay put in the top performances in both the sprints and long jump, both girls will travel with the SRAC team to their first District Championships! It was another SRAC runner; Peigi MacKellar that put in the top distance run with a personal best time of 2minutes 46, but Uist not to be out done had Catrin Evans throw the shot put the farthest! Many of the older runners have put in a long winter of cross country and track training and on their opening event of the season many personal best time tumbled! In the 800 meters Ailis Murray and Holly MacIver ran best times of 2 minutes 27 and SRAC training pal/sister Jane MacIver clocked 2 minutes 30. The SRAC sprints squad all recorded P.B.’s and amongst the best performances on the day were the sprinting and long jumping of Hannah MacLeod, Jodie MacKay and Alasdair Summers. Uist’s Mairi Morrison has been consistent through the years in her athletics and continued with good form on Saturday’s HIPPO in the triple jump and 300 meters. Full results will shortly be posted on the Stornoway Running and Athletics Club web site (www.srac.org.uk) and further comparisons can be made against the events in Orkney, Shetland and Inverness at www.gohippo. Many thanks to all those volunteering on the day, we look forward to the second HIPPO which will be incorporated into the Western Isles track and field Championships on Saturday June 20th. Meanwhile youngsters wishing to be involved in athletics will be welcome at Smith Avenue track each Saturday at 10.30am and Tuesday at 6pm for under 13 age group and upward. Adults interested in assisting or training to become coaches should contact a club coach at these sessions. A Tupper
