Harris Half Marathon 2009

Local Harris and HEB3 Winner

SRAC runner Andrew Joyce, who had earlier in the season become the first local runner to win the Stornoway Half Marathon, also won the Harris title in style on Saturday! His second individual victory in the HEB 3 (in which runners must complete three form five half marathons, Stornoway, Benbecula, Skye, Barra or Harris) by over three minutes, ensured an overall victory of one minute, twenty seconds!

On a gloriously sunny day that was greatly welcomed by visiting tourists and locals alike, all the elements that make racing half marathons difficult ensured that for the one hundred and thirty four runners finishing the race were made to work very, very hard for their finishers’ medals! The character building Hebridean wind was present for most of the first eight miles, which combined with the hot and sunny conditions ensured the four water stations were well used. There was also the matter of the four mile climb form Luskintrye that either made some of the runners race, or broke them! However the degree of difficulty of both the course and the weather could not stop the biggest ever number form crossing the finish line in Tarbert in a Harris Half Marathon. Perhaps the unmatchable beauty of this stunning route was the energizer that remedied the aches and pains of the punishing terrain and conditions?

At the start line at Borve Lodge Bellahouston Harrier Greig Glendinning had a 29 second advantage over SRAC’s Andrew Joyce and Gordon Lennox of Ross-shire was a close third with veteran Terry Coyle also ready to mount a challenge!  From the start the four closely followed by Portobello’s Peter Buchanan and Paul McLaren (Stornoway) pushed the pace breaking well clear by four miles at Luskentyre. There had been doubt over Joyce as he pulled up at three miles having trouble coughing. But, he’d rejoined the group and by mid race Andy Joyce and Terry Coyle had broken away from the rest of the lead group! From eight miles on where the course becomes more forgiving Andy broke clear. Aware of being 29 seconds behind the “Bella” runner after two HEB 3 races he pushed hard to the finish in an effort to become the first Hebridean, Hebridean 3 winner! Andy crossed the line victoriously in 1hour 19minutes and 51 seconds to take the Harris title and with what would prove to be a HEB 3 winning margin of 1 minute and 20 seconds!

Terry Coyle again proved that as a super veteran he could still mix it with the younger runners and took second ahead of Lennox. Helensburgh runner Julia Henderson who had shadowed the following pack for the entire race finished well clear of Corstorphine’s Gillian Carr in a good time on such a day of 1hour 30minutes and 33secs. However there was still to be winning success for the Corstorphine runner Gillian Carr as she won the HEB 3 series title.

SRAC were present at the race in numbers with six runners in the top twenty and were the team winners on the day. But the well travelled Portobello Harriers team took the HEB 3 team prize ahead of SRAC, the women’s team prize was won by Hunters Bog Trotters. It would appear that SRAC‘s team efforts in future events will be much strengthened as the club’s number one, Andrew Joyce will be supported by new club runners Stuart MacIver, Paul MacLaren and Jonny Pritchard.
The HEB 3 celebrated its twentieth season and is the longest running half marathon series in Scotland. This year a total of sixty eight completed the HEB 3 and eleven did all five island races! So it will be the coming of age for the highly popular HEB 3 and event organiser Jim Bruce of SRAC will have a new sponsor in place for the series for 2010. The late Buck MacAskil had sponsored the event (N & C Plant Hire) since 2001and his support and enthusiasm for the event was greatly appreciated.
