2 Islands Half Marathon: Berneray to Lochmaddy

27th August 2011

The inaugural “2 islands half marathon” from Berneray to North Uist on Saturday was re-routed to run only on North Uist, from Griminish to Lochmaddy, to respect a local funeral on Berneray. The organisers (N.Uist Amateur Athletic Club) did very well to reorganise everything, and the race took part in ideal weather conditions, along a lovely route.

Three SRAC members travelled for the race, first home being Keith Bray (9th overall) in 1.42.52, a good morale booster for the Loch Ness marathon in October. Jim Bruce was 13th and Angus “Charlton” Murray was 14th. The race was a first win for local man Alastair MacDonald from N.Uist, who is also in training for the Loch Ness marathon, his time was 1.34.06. Jenny Urquhart, who has just recently moved to the Uists, was first female in 1.41.12 and fifth overall.

The race finished at Tigh Dearg (race sponsors), but the SRAC lads weren’t able to stay for the hospitality because they had to catch the ferry from Berneray to avoid a four hour wait for the next one. They just made it, thanks to a lift from local lass Liz – many thanks!
