The last Saturday of the school holidays saw the first club track and field match take place at Smith Avenue in dry but blustery winds. In a very close point tally for the day SRAC just edged a home win over visiting Edinburgh club, Corstorphine AAC.

SRAC athletes looking pleased with themselves

From just after 10am when the first track event got under way the track and field competitions were non stop busy with athletes from both clubs competing in under 14, 16 and under 18 categories. Many of the home grown younger athletes in the under 12 age group also had the chance to run, jump and throw also!

In the first race on the track, a mixed under 16/18 boys 800m Calum Smith and Jack Williams set a very fast pace and took maximum points over their SRAC opposition! Their times though descent were probably a bit off their best as the wind made it difficult to set times close or better than personal bests! However, the event wasn’t really about personal bests (PB) and both club’s athletes dug in and gritted their teeth to fight for every point.

As the Corstorphine middle distance lads bagged maximum points the field events were favouring SRAC with Eilidh MacLeod winning the under 14 girls high jump in a PB of 1 meter 40 and Finlay Summers throwing a new shot put PB of 9 meters 01 to win the boys under 14 categories. Not only did they gain team “max” points, but both jumped up the Scottish rankings into third place!

Throughout the day the point’s scores shifted from one club to the other with SRAC marginally ahead. There were also the traditional relays at the end of the day SRAC with four female team’s, two male and one mixed team! The SRAC girls “A” team ran a winning time in the 4 x 200m relay of 2:00:007 over Corstorphine 2:04:130. Similarly the SRAC boys won in 1:56:771, Corstorphine 1:59:717. The final event of the day was an unusual (good craic) senior relay of 1 x 800, 1 x 1600, 1 x 1200 and a last leg of 800. This one didn’t have the same “charge of enthusiasm” of the youngsters relays, but it was well supported, good humoured, but still with the competitive edge! The first leg over 800 was almost a “dead heat” at the hand over before SRAC lost a ground over the 1600 and 1200 leg. But in the final leg SRAC had the luxury of sending Donnie MacLeod on to catch Corstorphine’s Megan who had not long finished the Westside 10k and that rounded of a super day! The super day was complemented with a fine evening at Sandwick hall with a BBQ and family Ceilidh!

Special thanks to sponsors of the match; Unions Unison and Unite, Hebrides Haulage and Scottish Fuels that allowed commemorative tops to be bought for participating athletes ( and very well received). Also all who contributed to the buffet lunch and the track and field volunteer officials.

The points scores were (including relays);
