Stornoway star:track Success in Sunshine Eilidh on the Podium

Over forty youngsters took part in the second star:track event organised by SRAC in the island last Saturday at Smith Avenue track and field facility and not a drop of rain! The National event sponsored by Norwich Union as part of UK Athletics fun to fulfilment programme aims to do exactly what it says. Get children involved at a young age, show them the fun side of athletics and the different events that can involve participants with different skills and abilities. All the athletics basics are learned runs jumps and throws, with variations in the jumps, triple, long and high jump. Shot putt, soft hammer and javelin in the throws and both sprint events and endurance for those with a preference to running! A day for all preferences and all abilities!

Eilidh on the Podium

In the 9 – 11 year old’s group there were fine shows of enthusiasm and abilities both form club members that have attended club sessions for some time and also great contribution from new faces that SRAC hope to see much more of in the future! Hopefully some will go on to represent the Western Isles at a future World Island Games!

Eilidh on the Podium

Sadly this will be the last organised event the Murray brothers Angus and Allan will take part in with the club as they will be moving across the Atlantic. But their contribution even as young boys has been great and Angus and Allan will be missed, perhaps some of the new faces at star:track, such as Micheil R Smith and Mark MacDonald to name a couple will help “fill” their place?

Eilidh on the Podium

In the older age group 20 athletes took part in the star:track Pentathlon Shine Award with three managing to achieve the gold standard. However, the event introduces youngsters to events for the very first time giving the chance to try something new. Thus, all the scores were not so strong; this can be seen particularly in the boy’s 1500meters endurance run where all participating scored the maximum points! SRAC it would appear are well prepared for the upcoming winter cross-country season.
